St. Thomas, Ontario, April 12, 2018 - Elgin St. Thomas Health Unit would like to
inform the community of a vaccine administration error occurring in the grade 7
school immunization program. In each school, one student may have received an extra
vaccine while another student was either not vaccinated or received the wrong vaccine.
The error occurred in a group of 11 students at Straffordville Public School and
in a group of 4 students at Assumption Catholic Elementary School.
Because vaccines are proven to be safe, there is no threat to the health of the
affected students as a result of this event. Parents of these students have been
informed. No other students were affected by the error. As a parent, if you have
not been contacted by the health unit, your child was not affected.
The health unit considers safety to be of utmost importance in its programs and
services. Further controls will be introduced to current processes while these incidents
are under review. Elgin St. Thomas Health Unit wants to express its regret to all
those affected by this situation.
