Elgin District Women's Institute and the Elgin County Museum present: An International Women's Day program, February 29, 2 PM, 460 Sunset Dr., St. Thomas

February 8, 2020 - In honour of International Women's Day (March 8), Elgin District Women's Institute will present Nellie McClung, author and activist, one of the "Famous Five" who brought the Persons Case before the Supreme Court. In addition to Nellie there will be an illustrated talk on the role these and other women played at the turn of the 19th century in winning equal rights for women including the right to vote.

The Persons Case was inaugurated by Emily Murphy, author and first female magistrate in the Empire. Her rulings as a judge were routinely appealed because she wasn't a "person." She allowed her name to stand for the Senate, an office to whom "persons" could be appointed as was stated in the British North America Act. The prime minister of the day refused to appoint her because "person" was interpreted as applying only to men. A petition with 500,000 signatures demonstrated the wide public support for her appointment and in 1927 the five, Emily, Nellie McClung, Henrietta Muir Edwards, Louise McKinney, and Irene Parlby petitioned the court for a ruling on the definition of "person."

The day will also feature samples of snack foods from around the world.

International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality.

International Women's Day (IWD) has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not country, group or organization specific.

All welcome, 2 PM, Elgin County Heritage Centre, 460 Sunset Drive. Please park behind the County Building next door. In case of inclement weather, the program will run on March 7th.
