At the Central Elgin Council Meeting on March 13, 2017, Joe Jackson of L.R. Jackson Fisheries was recognized for his assistance to Central Elgin Fire Rescue in December when a kayaker was in distress near Little Beach.

Mayor Marr gave a description of the event that transpired that day " On the afternoon of December 26, 2016, a person observed what appeared to be a kayaker in distress approximately 250 to 300 yards out from Little Beach hanging on to a submerged kayak, frantically waving his paddle. At times the witness lost sight of the kayaker and immediately called 911.

Central Elgin Fire Rescue was dispatched to respond, once on scene, crews were able to see the Kayaker struggling to stay above the water in the three meter waves, and immediately requested response from CFB Trenton and realized they had to come up with an immediate plan, otherwise the three meter waves would overtake the kayaker. Because Marine Rescue was already in winter storage, crews came up with a quick plan to contact Jackson Fisheries to acquire their boat, as well as deploy a personal watercraft.

In the meantime crews maintained visual contact and were in constant communication with the rescue team. Fire Crews on the PWC were able to direct the fishing tug to the location of the kayaker, and were able to utilize the pole to reach the Kayaker and pull him safely into the fishing tug. The kayaker was subsequently transported to hospital as a precaution."

Chief McDonough stated " This water rescue was an extraordinary team effort by all involved, and is deserving of recognition, and commendation, and special thanks to Joe Jackson of L.R. Jackson Fisheries."

Mayor Marr expressed "On behalf of Central Elgin, again, thank you very much. it was great to see the community come forward, and use an individual to help our rescue team, this was indeed a team effort. But not everybody responds the way you did this time, and again, thank you very much!"

Chief McDonough presented Joe Jackson with a Plaque showing an engraving of his fishing tug and commendation from Central Elgin for helping save a life.

Duke Cummins, District Chief of Port Stanley also presented Joe Jackson with a card and gift certificate to go out for dinner in appreciation of his efforts that day.
