Central Elgin's Third Party Advertiser

by Doug Harvey
Central Elgin's Third Party Advertiser

This year's Central Elgin Election has something unique from previous elections, it's called a Third Party Advertiser. Kyle Cronk is Central Elgin's First Third Party Advertiser and only registered person in this category in Elgin County.

Kyle is an advocate for ABetterElgin.ca. This website informs the public and he is asking everyone to go to the site before they vote in Central Elgin.

About this sign, Unpopular, Costly outcomes in Central Elgin, Kyle Cronk asks "If it isn't council accepting responsibility for the decisions, then who is?"

The Municipal Elections Act, 1996 now includes rules for third party advertising. Third party advertisers must now register with each municipality they plan to advertise in.

A third party advertisement is any paid advertisement in any format, including paid social media, websites, signs, TV, newspaper, and radio. Advertisements must clearly identify the name of the advertiser and provide their contact information. Individuals, corporations, and trade unions can register as third party advertisers. Candidates cannot. Third party advertising must be independent, and cannot be directed by candidates.

Third party advertisers need to register with the Municipal Clerk. Registration runs until October 19, 2018. Registration must occur before advertisers spend money or accept contributions. Contributions include money, goods, and services.
