Boxall Takes Shedden, Pirates Over Sailors, Blues Over Maroons

The third set of games of the 2018 Port Stanley Senior Softball season were held Friday, May 25th in mainly sunny skies with temperatures rising over the day to 26 degrees Celsius. The wind was from the southwest at 20 km/h which didn't seem to have much effect on the games, and a UV index of 8 or very high. During the first game an air quality statement was issued by Environment Canada stating that increasing ground-level ozone concentrations had developed over the region. Coughing or throat irritation may be experienced during strenuous outdoor activities. Exposure to air pollution is a health concern for people with heart or breathing problems, those with diabetes, children and the elderly.

In Game 1 Boxall took the early lead with four runs in the first while Shedden got on the scoreboard with two, and added another single in the second but remained down by one. Both teams got singles in the third keeping Boxall in the lead by one, while during the fourth Boxall managed to add another single to lead by two, and added another single in the sixth to lead 7-3. The seventh was even with both teams adding singles, while during the eighth Boxall managed another two runs to win the game with a score of Boxall 10 - Shedden 5.

In Game 2 the Sailors got off to a early lead with a single in the first, while the Pirates came back with two runs in the bottom of the first to steal the lead by one. The Pirates extended their lead by one in the second, and by another two in the third, while the Sailors came back with a single in the fourth keeping the Pirates leading 5-2. In the fifth the Pirates again added a single putting the team ahead by four, but the game wasn't over yet, as the Sailors still had four more innings to turn things around. The game got a little closer in the eighth when the Sailors got two versus just a single for the Pirates. The biggest surprise came in the top of the ninth when the Sailors tied the game with three runs making the game interesting, and putting the Pirates in that do or die position. The bottom of the ninth proved to be a close call for the Pirates who managed a single to regain the lead to win with a score of Pirates 8 - Sailors 7.

In Game 3 the Blues took the early lead with two in the first, and a single in the second, while the Maroons managed a single to get on the scoreboard. The Blues extended their lead with another two in the third and four in the fifth to lead by eight. In the bottom of the fifth the Maroons came back starting with two runs, managed another four in the seventh placing them down only by two. With two innings to go the Blues managed to hold on to the win by adding a single in the eighth, and giving up a single to the Maroons in the ninth, to end another close game with a final score of Blues 10 - Maroons 8.
