Spitfires take it all in the third

On Sunday, February 5th, 2017 the Port Stanley Sailors played game forty, the last game of the regular season against the Aylmer Spitfires on home ice at the Port Stanley Arena.

First goal honours went to the Aylmer Spitfires at 8:48, when Luke Vanderspank (10) got lucky with a shot off the goalpost, with Cody Underhill (16), and Luke Regier (8) assisting. With Aylmer taking more shots on goal, Spitfires Cody Underhill (16) scored Aylmer's second goal, while on a power play at 14:39, with Jake Morin (14), and Dawson Winchester (3) assisting.

The second period started off at 0:19 with Sailors Brayden Latimer (19) coming out strong, and taking advantage of a early Spitfires penalty, wasting no time getting past the defence, and easily got the puck past Spitfires goalie Garrett Farquhar (30), with Kyle Hopper (16) assisting. Port Stanley tied the game while shorthanded, on a beautiful, by the book, unassisted goal by Nolan Blewett (13) which kept up the Sailors drive to the net. With less than a minute in the second period at 19:21, Spitfires Andrew Snowden (5) broke the tie, scoring Aylmer's third goal, with Dawson Winchester (3), and Jesiah Sweetland (17) assisting.

Penalties really made an impact on this game, the more penalties a team got, the more goals for the opposition, and the third period proves it. Port Stanley took the penalty lead in the third period with nine to Aylmer's two, but Aylmer took that advantage, and scored six goals. The first at 4:20 by Dawson Winchester (3) on a power play, with Ryan Vandenbroek (15), and Jesiah Sweetland (17) assisting. The second at 8:41 by Luke Regier (8), with Matt Bond (20), and Cody Underhill (16) assisting. The third at 11:48 by Ryan Van Roestel (11) on another power play, with Jake Morin (14), and Dustin Dunlop (4) assisting. Number four came in while shorthanded at 16:45 by Andrew Snowden (5) who went unassisted on Sailors goalie Andrew Maass (30). Number five at 18:00 by Sebastian Nogueira (22) while shorthanded, with Luke Regier (8) assisting. Number six at 19:22 by Matt Bond (20), with Luke Regier (8), and Andrew Snowden (5) assisting, to give the Spitfires an easy win with the score Aylmer Spitfires 9 - Port Stanley Sailors 2.
