Port Stanley Sailors Win 53 Over Exeter Hawks

On Friday, February 10th, 2018 the Port Stanley Sailors played their first game of the Provincial Junior Hockey League Playoffs against the Exeter Hawks at the Port Stanley Arena. During the regular season the Exeter Hawks finished in second place while the Port Stanley Sailors finished in seventh, so one has to wonder the logic of putting these two teams together in the first round of playoffs.

The first period was filled with plenty of end to end action, with both teams having several close scoring opportunities, but after twenty minutes, the game remained scoreless. Shots on goal for the period were Exeter Hawks 17 - Port Stanley Sailors 15.

The second period continued to keep the fans glued to their seats with that close call, end to end action with Hawks Evan Hayter (13) scoring the first goal of the game at 2:07, assisted by Austin Carter (16), and Troy Kennedy (3). Fifty-one seconds later at 2:58 Port Stanley's Shane Kocsis-Cochrane (26) assisted by Tyler Simon (25), and Dawson Maton (18) put in the Sailors first goal tying the game. With that extra man advantage Exeter's Max Bannon (5) scored the first power play goal of the evening with Liam Melady (20), and Jon Baker (14) assisting to put the Hawks in the lead. Just over a minute later at 7:09 Sailors Austin Muscutt (3) tied the game with assists to Kyle Hopper (16), and Eric Scherer (21) giving the home team fans something to cheer about. Support from the fans seemed to be a deciding factor in this game for at 11:56 on a power play Sailors Dawson Cook (24) scored the tie breaker with Derek Smith (10), and Brady Allen (2) assisting giving Port Stanley the lead for the first time in this first playoff game. Shots on goal for the period were Exeter Hawks 17 - Port Stanley Sailors 17.

The Sailors had a one goal advantage coming into the third period but gave that away at 7:34 during a Hawks power play with Jon Baker (14) scoring and Liam Melady (20) assisting who took that advantage of an extra man on the ice to tie the game. Just past the halfway mark at 10:08 Port Stanley regained the lead again to the delight of those home town fans, with Tyler Kippax (13) scoring the fourth power play goal of the evening, with Tyler Foslett (9), and Austin Muscutt (3) assisting. Port Stanley's Tyler Foslett (9) managed to add another goal at 18:36 to give the Sailors a two goal lead with assists to Mack Tufford (8), and Brady Allen (2). With the Sailors in the lead, Exeter pulled the goalie during the last minute of play, but even with that extra man on the ice the Hawks just couldn't put in another goal giving that first playoff game win to a cheering hometown crowd and to the Sailors with a final score of Port Stanley Sailors 5 - Exeter Hawks 3.
