Port Stanley Sailors Win 32 In Overtime

On Tuesday, February 13th, 2018 the Port Stanley Sailors played their third game of seven in the Provincial Junior Hockey League Playoffs against the Exeter Hawks at the Port Stanley Arena. So far both teams have won a game starting with the Sailors 5-3 win in the first game on Friday February 10th, and second game on Sunday February 11th with Exeter winning 6-1 over the Sailors.

There was a 10 minute Misconduct penalty to Exeter's Jason Vanbommel just before the game got started which was unusual watching a player being penalized before the game got started. The Exeter Hawks got the first goal of the game at 10:35 of the first period with Liam Melady (20) scoring, assisted by Max Bannon (5), and Jon Baker (14). Shots on goal for the period were Exeter Hawks 14 - Port Stanley Sailors 14.

The second period continued to be filled with end to end action which showed just how much it means for a team to play on home ice. At 5:54 of the second period, to Exeter's surprise, while shorthanded Sailors Mack Tufford (8), assisted by Brady Allen (2), and Dawson Cook (24) put in the tying goal giving the home team fans something to cheer about. Taking advantage of a Sailors penalty at 14:40 the Hawks regained the lead from Jon Baker's (14) power play goal assisted by Liam Melady (20), and Max Bannon (5). Shots on goal for the period were Exeter Hawks 13 - Port Stanley Sailors 20.

The Sailors went into the third period down by one, but took to the ice still determined to get that extra goal that would tie the game. It took awhile but at 16:17 of the third period some determined Sailors Brayden Latimer (19), assisted by Eric Scherer (21), and Dawson Maton (18) gave Port Stanley that tying goal that would take both teams into sudden death overtime. Shots on goal for the period were Exeter Hawks 10 - Port Stanley Sailors 13.

After over six minutes of tense overtime action at 6:08, Port Stanley's Austin Muscutt (3) assisted by Dawson Cook (24), and Brady Allen (2) scored that winning goal for a cheering hometown crowd that ended with a final score of Port Stanley Sailors 3 - Exeter Hawks 2. Shots on goal for the overtime period were Exeter Hawks 4 - Port Stanley Sailors 8. Tonight win puts Port Stanley ahead with two wins out of three games played in this best of seven playoff series.
