Spitfires Take It Four

On Sunday, February 12th, 2017 the Port Stanley Sailors played the fourth game of a best of seven PJHL Quarter-Final Playoffs against the Aylmer Spitfires on home ice at the Port Stanley Arena. Before the game started, Sailors Nolan Blewett, number 13 received an award from the Provincial Junior Hockey League for the Player Of The Month for January, for his efforts in fourteen games, where he scored twenty-nine goals, and thirteen assists, for a total of forty-two points.

The first period was scoreless, but if you like to watch a hockey game filled with almost more action in the penalty box, than on the ice, well sorry that's not my game. With the Aylmer Spitfires spending 42 minutes on nine infractions, and the Port Stanley Sailors spending 21 minutes on six infractions for a combined total of 63 minutes of penalties in a 20 minute period, somehow that just doesn't add up for amateur hockey. After watching a player get knock out, and watching him lie on the ice for awhile, I couldn't stop thinking, I hope he's alright, it's just a game. A coach came out on the ice to investigate the level of injury the player had sustained, and after a minute, the player, with some assistance, got up, and bravely made his way off the ice and into the dressing room. You could tell by his movements down the hallway that he was in pain. As for this incident, I was close by, and as far as I could tell, it was an unfortunate accident. But, on the other hand, if this could have happened because of some infraction caused by another player, then that's more or less preventable. The current rules of the game seem to reward aggressive behaviour on the way penalty time is served. While watching the first period action, I could not believe it when I saw four members of the same team serving time in the penalty box, while four players from the same team were still on the ice playing, it just doesn't make sense.

Second period action finally saw the first goal of the game at 9:56, with the honours going to Port Stanley's Kyle Hopper (16), with assists to Ryan Humphrey (23), and Eric Potts (28). The Sailors lead lasted for just over four minutes, and came to an end on a power play at 14:08, when Spitfires Kyle DiCicco (13) took that extra man advantage to tie the game, with assists going to Cody Underhill (16), and James Collins (19).

The third period proved to be a last chance for Port Stanley to stay in the series, having already lost the first three games, and this game was still tied. With both teams going end to end, it was a great game for the fans, as many could be heard from all sides of the rink. Then at 12:40, Spitfires James Collins (19) put in Aylmer's second goal, with Cody Underhill (16), and Jake Morin (14) assisting. Aylmer's third goal went in at 17:06, with Ryan Vandenbroek (15) taking credit, with Jesse Tottle (18), and Jesiah Sweetland (17) assisting. Time was running out for Port Stanley to make up for a two goal deficit, so the goalie was pulled to get the extra man on the ice, but after thirty-one seconds, Spitfires James Collins (19) shot the puck at an empty net and scored Aylmer's fourth goal, giving the Spitfires their fourth win of the PJHL Quarter-Final Playoffs with the score Aylmer Spitfires 4 - Port Stanley Sailors 1.
