Vecchio Welcomes Shadow Finance Minister to Speak with Local Farmers

October 11th, 2017 - St. Thomas, ON - Karen Vecchio, Member of Parliament for Elgin-Middlesex-London, and Shadow Minister for Families, Children and Social Development welcomed The Honourable Pierre Poilievre, the Shadow Minister for Finance and Vice-Chair of the Finance Committee joined over a dozen farmers to discuss the Liberal Government's Proposed Tax Changes.

Following a roundtable hosted by the London Chamber of Commerce with 20 local businesses, Poilievre joined Vecchio at Ferguson Brothers Wednesday afternoon.

Area farmers gathered at the local bean producer and spoke openly about the changes to the Corporate Tax system and the impact on generational farms with Poilievre and Vecchio.

Vecchio has worked in Federal politics for 13 years and stated "I have never seen an issue like this that has created such backlash. Usually, there would be constituents both supporting and challenging these changes. Farmers, mechanics, home renovators, doctors, retailers and many more types of small businesses have called, emailed or visited my office on this particular issue and constituents are mad and extremely worried."

On October 3rd, the Official Opposition brought forward a motion to extend the consultation period to January 31, 2018. Only 1 member of the government, MP Wayne Long, voted to extend the consultation period. MP Long has recently been removed from both Standing Committees as a result of voting against his government.

"Canadians have been very vocal on this issue," said Vecchio. "This Government needs to start listening to their constituents. Small businesses are the engine of our economy and we cannot continue to allow this attack."
