Obituary for John Evers

Evers-Johannes "John" "Jo" of Extendicare, Port Stanley passed away peacefully at his residence on Friday, November 10th, 2017, at the age of 90.

Beloved husband of the late Wilhelmina "Helma" "Meintje" (Geers) Evers (2011). Dearly loved father of Martin (Marilyn) Evers, Joseph (Sandy) Evers, Yvonne (Gary) Steer, and John Evers. Cherished Opa of Kylie & Thomas Evers, Megan & Gary Steer, and Marissa (Sam) Jeffery & Justin Evers. Survived in the Netherlands, by brother Martien, and sisters Marijke and Lia, and in Brazil, by brother Jose ́. Predeceased by his sisters Petra (1998) & Annamarie (2017) and brothers Henricus "Harry" (2012) & Gerard (2016).

John was born in Asten, NB Netherlands on July 16th 1927 son of the late Martin (1984) and Martha (1981) (Aarts) Evers. He was a blacksmith in the Netherlands and proudly served as a medic in the Dutch Army. He married Helma on his birthday in 1952, then they emigrated to Canada with their son Martin in 1957.

John was a member of Holy Angel's Parish and a charter member of St. Anne's Parish. Over the years, he worked as a Millwright at Yarmouth Machine, Canadian Timken, and the St. Thomas Ford assembly plant. He and Helma enjoyed many wonderful years travelling across Canada, the United States & Europe as well as the occasional trip back to Holland to visit family and friends..

Thank you to the Extendicare staff who provided years of caring support to both John and Helma. We would also like to thank Cassidy from Serenity Wellness Centre for her assistance with John in his last few months.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Anne's Parish on Nov 17th at 10:00 am, with interment of ashes in Holy Angel's Cemetery. Visitations will be held at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin Street, St. Thomas, on Nov 16th from 6pm to 8pm. Memorial Donations may be made to the Elgin – St. Thomas Alzheimer's Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
