Ahara, Frances. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Frances
Ruth Ahara on Monday, August 5, 2019 at Terrace Lodge in Aylmer, Ontario.
Frances, or Frankie to her family and friends, was 93. Frankie was predeceased by
her husband, William Robert Ahara, her parents, George Elmer and Frances Lillian
Cole (Haight), her sons, Ronald Curtis and Michael Curtis, her brother George Cole
(Mary) and sister Alberta Cluff-Smith (Bill). Frankie is survived by her daughters
Catherine and Kimberley Ahara (Sam Ward), her daughter-in-law Maggie, grandchildren,
nieces, and a nephew.
Frankie was born March 31, 1927 in South Gate, California but she lived most of
her life in St. Thomas and Elgin County. She attended Arthur Voaden Secondary School
before working at the Hillcrest Inn in Port Stanley. Her love of music began in
earnest at the L&PS Pavillon, later the Stork Club, leading Frankie to a career
at the Howse of Music in St. Thomas. Bob Ahara joined the company a few years later
and they married in 1964. After adopting Kim and Cathy, Frankie became the church
secretary for the St. Thomas Suburban Pastoral Charge. Frankie was a curious person
with an infectious laugh. She enjoyed baking, painting, animals, road trips, Paris,
computers, and gardening; there wasn't a blouse, fish taco, or flower she didn't
love. She devoted much of her time to horticulture; she was a lifetime member and
former President of the St. Thomas Horticultural Society, a member of the Garden
Club of London, and Chairman of the Trillium Awards in St. Thomas. She was also
an accredited design and rose judge, lecturer, and teacher.
A Memorial Service will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 11, 2019 at Talbotville
United Church, 10734 Sunset Drive in Talbotville. Internment will follow at the
Shedden Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m on Saturday August
10, 2019 at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin Street, St. Thomas. If desired, remembrances
may be made in Frankie's memory to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada, the Canadian
Diabetes Association, or Animal Aide St. Thomas, Elgin. The family extends special
thanks to Dr. Rick Goodhew, St. Thomas Emergency Medical Services, and the staff
at Terrace Lodge in Aylmer for the excellent support, care, and compassion each
showed our Mother.
