Mary Anne Silverthorn elected Chair of the Woodstock Police Service Board

The Woodstock Police Services Board is pleased to announce that during the January 8, 2018 regular monthly meeting of Board members, Mary Anne Silverthorn ( Provincial Appointee) was elected to the position of Chair and Nancy O’Grady (Provincial Appointee) was elected to the position of Vice Chair of the Board for the year 2018.

Ms. Mary Anne Silverthorn, a veteran member has served twelve (12) years as a member of the Woodstock Police Service Board (and its predecessor the Oxford Community Police Service). She has served as Chair in the past. In July 2017, she was elected to the position of President of the Canadian Association of Police Governance (CAPG) after having been an active member for a number of years including holding the position of Director since 2013. As well Ms. Silverthorn has served as a Director with the Ontario Association of Police Service Boards (OAPSB). Her vast experience at all levels of police governance is an incredible asset for the WPSB.

Ms. Nancy O’Grady is also a veteran member of the Board having served seven (7) years. She has previously held both the Chair and Vice Chair positions as well as sit on numerous committees and has worked tirelessly for the benefit of the board.

The remaining Board members are Mayor Trevor Birtch, Shawn Shapton (Woodstock Council Representative) and Sandra Carnegie (Community Representative).

Chair Silverthorn said it is a privilege to be elected Chair of the WPS Board. As we look ahead 2018 promises to be a busy year—negotiations with our employee groups, presentation of the WPS budget to the city council, just name a few indicating our role as a governance board – a role of civilian oversight to the service. As the Board monitors the proposed changes to the Police Services Act, personally, I feel strongly that each member of the Board needs to continue to avail themselves of the numerous training opportunities to be current about the proposed changes to the Act and the affect to our local service.

Vice Chair O’Grady said l look forward to a busy and productive year of on-going solid teamwork around the Board table.”

Chief Bill Renton stated he is pleased with the appointments of Mary Anne Silverthorn and Nancy O’Grady as Chair and Vice Chair respectively and looks forward to working with this dedicated, committed and professional Police Service Board for the coming year. Their best interests are clearly with the members of the service and the community we serve.

Under the authority of the Police Services Act, members of the Board are responsible for overall governance of the Woodstock Police Service and ensuring the provision of adequate and effective police services within the City of Woodstock.
