April 19th, 2017 - Another version of the CRA scam arrived in St. Thomas yesterday.
Shortly after filing her tax return our complainant advised that she received a
text message from someone indicating they worked for the Canada Revenue Agency.
The message indicated that there was a mistake in her return and she was in fact
receiving too much money back, directed her to a website that looked similar to
the actual CRA website where she provided some personal information. After doing
so she contacted her accountant who informed her that CRA does not communicate through
text message and to report this to Police. The victim is not out any money however
she was provided phone numbers to Equifax and TransUnion to help prevent her identity
from being stolen.
If you suspect you’re a victim of fraud you can contact Equifax at 1-800-465-7166
(option 3) and TransUnion at 1-800-663-9980.
Reporting Fraud does not guarantee you’ll receive your money back but it could assist
with the missing piece of the puzzle. For a complete list of frauds out there you
