Fifty Three Drivers Charged with Speeding on Highway 401

Thames Centre, ON - Speeding and aggressive driving remain leading causes of motor vehicle collisions and fatalities on OPP-patrolled roads. Speeding often leads to other aggressive driving behaviours such as following too closely and unsafe lane changes.

On April 14, 2017, between approximately 8:30 a.m. and 11:15 p.m., the Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted speed enforcement on Highway 401 at Elgin Road.

Fifty three drivers were charged under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) with speeding for travelling at 130 kilometers per hour (km/h) or more in the 100 km/h zone.

Additionally, two drivers exceeded the 100 km/h speed limit by 50 km/h or more and were charged with race a motor vehicle, contrary to the HTA. One of these drivers was a 22-year-old female with a toddler in the rear seat of the vehicle. These drivers' vehicles were seized, and their drivers' licences were suspended for 7 days.

The Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) Driver's Handbook states: "The risk of a fatality or serious injury is almost five times greater for vehicles crashing at 50 km/h or more above the posted limit on a highway with a posted limit of 100 km/h."

For more information, please visit the MTO website at: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca

Middlesex County OPP will continue to apply a combination of public education and targeted enforcement to change aggressive driving behaviour and enhance traffic safety.
