London, Ontario, Thursday, March 28, 2019 - Reclaiming Our Time is a student-lead,
day-long conference that will generate conversations about the experiences LGBTQ+
students regularly endure. The purpose of the conference is to highlight the voices
of LGBTQ2+ students and staff, learn valuable lessons from the student stories and
spark change within our community. The conference takes place at Fanshawe College
on Friday, March 29.
The day will feature keynote presentations from internationally recognized speakers
who have addressed Columbia University, United Nations Children's Fund, World Economic
Forum and featured on CNN, CBC and the BBC. Reclaiming Our Time will also host a
student panel on challenges marginalized students face.
David Garzon, Community Engagement Manager at White Ribbon, the world's largest
movement of men and boys working to end violence against women and girls, promote
gender equity, healthy relationships and a new vision of masculinity. David's presentation
will focus on 'allyship', standing with women, queer folks and other men to support
them and advocate for their right to have a life free of violence and harassment
of any type and the steps we can take to become an ally.

Shawn Ahmed, journalist and queer Muslim activist who has been honoured by both
the World Economic Forum and the Webby Awards. Shawn has worked with the Toronto
Unity Mosque (the world's largest LGBTQ+ inclusive mosque) and various non-profit
organizations in Canada. He currently serves as a member of the Real-Time Academy
of Short Form Arts & Sciences and as an associate member of the International Academy
of Digital Arts and Sciences.
