Innovation Week at Fanshawe
London, Ontario – From Monday, March 18 to Friday, March 22, Fanshawe will celebrate
Innovation Week at the London Campus. During the week, many student, faculty and
staff events will take place around campus that will promote and celebrate faculty
research, entrepreneurship and innovative thinking.
All events take place at Fanshawe’s London Campus, 1001 Fanshawe College Blvd (see

Monday, March 18 – Counselling and Accessibility Services will co-host a
series of workshop sessions focused on mental health innovation.
Time: 9 a.m. to noon
Location: H1005 (first two hours), SC2013 (final hour)
Tuesday, March 19 – Stone Soup
Time: 3 to 6:30 p.m.
Location: James A. Colvin Atrium
About: Five innovative entrepreneurs who have turned their side gigs into careers
will talk about how they embraced innovation and built their networks to become
successful. This event will expose students and youth to the opportunities of entrepreneurship
and inspire them to discover their own talents, while exposing them to the vibrant
Wednesday, March 20 – Research and Innovation Day
Time: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Location: James A. Colvin Atrium
About: Research and Innovation Day is a one day show case that highlights the hard
work that our students, staff, and faculty put into their research projects. With
37 student projects in three competitive categories, 24 faculty projects, and a
new Innovation Wall activity, Research and Innovation Day 2019 is a celebration
of the innovative spirit at Fanshawe College and in the London community. Prizes
will be awarded in the following areas: Business Award, Industry Award, Community
Award, People’s Choice and Entrepreneurship.
Thursday, March 21 – Keynote Speaker: Gerard Puccio, Ph.D.
Time: 2 to 3:30 p.m.
Keynote topic: The Innovation Imperative: Why Creative Thinking is Considered a
Must-Have 21st Century Skill. Gerard Puccio has written more than 50 articles, chapters
and books. He is also an accomplished speaker and consultant who has worked with
major corporations, universities and numerous school districts. Some of his recent
clients include the BBC, Fisher-Price Brands, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Kraft
Foods, Rich Products, BNP Paribas, Rubbermaid, Coca-Cola, and the Fashion Institute
of Technology. He has delivered creativity workshops and presentations across the
United States and in more than 20 different countries. In recognition of his outstanding
work as a scholar, Puccio received the State University of New York Chancellor's
Recognition Award for Research Excellence, as well as the President's Medal for
Scholarship and Creativity.
Friday, March 22 – Launch of Ascend Applications App
Time: 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Location: Student Wellness Centre
About: This app will change the way people with barriers access the internet. Founded
by Ryan Kelly, one of Leap Junction’s most innovative clients, the Ascend Applications
App is a premiere plugin that fixes the common digital barriers faced by 1 in 7
people. The software uses artificial intelligence to analyse and explain images
for users who may not be able to see them, makes text easier to read, turns off
all distracting animations on a website, has a text-to-speech component and more.
The app has been tested with individuals, municipalities, non-profits and web development
agencies with great success.
