The Optimist Club of Port Stanley is holding an annual Spelling Bee for local elementary
schools. This is an oral contest only. It is meant to be an educational, fun event,
giving contestants the chance to practice their spelling skills.
Only Grade 5 students are eligible to compete. This allows for new student contestants
each year. The words used are at that level. A number of willing students have been
registered to compete.
Our competition differs from other contests in that our contestants are eliminated
after a third incorrect spelling…..not just one. This enables a contestant who may
make one, or a couple of incorrect spellings in the early rounds, to hang in there
and finish in first place; ahead of others who make all of their spelling errors
in later rounds and are eliminated. This rule equals (in a time sense) three times
the number of contestants in regular single spelling error elimination contests.
It can also help students get over any initial nervousness.
A whiteboard set on an easel and located by the stage will be used to progressively
show (by the Scorekeeper) the number of incorrect spellings by each contestant,
thus keeping the audience and the contestants informed of standings.
In the closing ceremonies:
A framed Participation Certificate will be given to each contestant. First, Second
and Third place ribbons will be awarded to the contestants who finish in those positions.
Cash prizes, in varying amounts according to final placement, will be presented
to each of the contestants. Thus, every student competitor receives something for
