Onion Skins and Peach Fuzz Memories of Ontario Farmerettes

Join us for a presentation and book signing Saturday, November 16, 1 p.m. at the Elgin County Heritage Centre.

Meet the authors Bonnie Sitter and Shirleyan English whose new book Onion Skins and Peach Fuzz: Memories of Ontario Farmerettes provides a glimpse into the experiences of the women who participated in a government-sponsored program to help with the war effort.

Learn about the forgotten history of the young women who answered the call to work on farms and orchards in Ontario during World War II. As part of a provincial program the Ontario Farm Service Force recruited women to replace male labour in the agricultural sector. These women, known as Farmerettes worked many long hours in the fields planting, hoeing, hand-weeding and harvesting fruits and vegetables.
