Elgin County Heritage Centre, 460 Sunset Drive, St. Thomas, Ontario
Family Day - Monday, February 18, 2019 1:00-4:00 pm
The Music Man wants you to join the town band!
Long-time Western University music professor and brass instrument collector Dr.
Henry Meredith will be hosting a Musical Family Day at the Elgin County Heritage
No experience required! – Come and try out various band instruments, receive some
basic instruction and try out for the band.
What kind of horn is it? An Antique Band Instrument Road Show -- Bring grandpa's
old cornet, and Aunt Maude's mellophone, and any musician portraits or town band
photos from your attic, along with your questions or stories about them. Prof. Meredith
will identify the instrument and possibly give you a valuation.
Drop in Kids Crafts! Visitors will also have a chance to make craft stick harmonicas
or make a medieval brass rubbing to take home.
Musical Family Day coincides with our current exhibit –Brass Bands and Base Ball,
based on Henry Meredith’s collection of rare 19th century brass band instruments.
The exhibit highlights the many community bands that flourished in Elgin County
around the turn of the 19th century.
Band concerts were a common pastime in Ontario of a century ago – holidays, fairs,
and other events rarely passed without a band performance. It was a time when every
community had a hall, a store, a school and many had a ball team and a brass band.
All Ages! No admission fee.
Please Park behind the Elgin County Administrative Building 450 Sunset Drive.
