Ontario Helping Small Businesses through new Digital Service Squads

May 1, 2019 - The Ontario government is working to help St. Thomas small businesses increase their productivity and modernize the way they do business by helping them adopt new digital technology through training provided by Digital Service Squads.

Each squad consists of one, two, or three digital technology specialists who work directly with local Business Improvement Area Associations and main street storefront or small business owners, providing them with free digital assessments and consultative services.

"Our government is committed to helping small businesses improve their competitiveness, create jobs and attract investment," said Ernie Hardeman, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. "That's why I'm so pleased that the City of St. Thomas will benefit from the expertise of a Digital Service Squad to help small businesses embrace digital technology that will help them grow. Our investment in the Digital Main Street program will help to ensure that Ontario is open for business and open for jobs."

Together, the Digital Service Squads help businesses adopt digital tools and technology that will enhance their digital presence, attract new clients and improve the way their goods and services are being marketed to help grow their business.

"The training provided by the Digital Service Squad will help modernize our local businesses and provide them with the tools and training to take advantage of new digital opportunities that will help businesses expand. These include setting up on online store to increase sales or promoting their business to a new audience using social media," said Jeff Yurek, MPP for Elgin-Middlesex-London.

The Digital Service Squads are made possible through a grant awarded to the city by the Ontario government, in partnership with the Ontario Business Improvement Area Association.

The grant will also include the purchase of hardware and technology. The St. Thomas Digital Service Squad is part of a community of consultants across Ontario, including Brockville, Hamilton, Kitchener and Toronto, that are equipped with hardware and technology to help main street small businesses grow and expand their digital presence and grow their customer base, in order to create jobs and ensure Ontario is open for business.
