St. Thomas, ON, November 29, 2019 - Today, MP Karen Vecchio was named as the Shadow
Minister for Women and Gender Equality.
"I am looking forward to this new challenge," said Vecchio. "Over the past four
years I have served on the Status of Women Committee as both a Member and as the
Chair. It has provided me incredible insight into the unique challenges women face
across the country, and I believe that I can bring a fair and positive vision to
this role. I will always fight for true equality for all Canadians."
Of particular focus for Vecchio will be ensuring the government is doing everything
it can in the fight against the disgusting practice of human trafficking, as well
as maximizing opportunities and support for women who are survivors of violence
and abuse.
Advocating on behalf of women working in Science, Engineering, Technology and Math
(STEM) industries such as agriculture, oil and gas, and manufacturing is also critical,
as women continue to be underrepresented in these fields.
"Women are involved in every sector of the Canadian economy. Unfortunately, the
Liberal government has chosen to ignore the voices of many women who are frustrated
with the lack of action on important projects such as pipelines and much-needed
support for agricultural producers. Women entrepreneurs struggle against rising
taxes and red tape in the Canadian economy." stated Vecchio.
"I look forward to working with and for these inspiring women and making sure that
their voices are heard in Parliament."
