Monday, October 24, 2016 - Parents face unique challenges in today's society and
a best-selling author who will be speaking at an upcoming symposium wants them to
know that they are not alone.
Ann Douglas, author of Parenting Through the Storm, will be presenting the keynote
address at a free conference on Saturday, November 12. Her presentation will inspire
parents to work with their children and the school board to create healthier school
Building Parent Engagement Together is the theme of this year's symposium by the
Thames Valley Parent Involvement Committee (TVPIC) in collaboration with Thames
Valley District School Board (TVDSB).
The one-day conference will give parents the opportunity to attend three workshops
presented by experts from TVDSB and other community organizations.
"This conference reinforces the invaluable role parents play in their children's
success at school and in life," says TVPIC Co-Chair Sharon Gowdey.
Workshop presenters will address important questions that parents should be asking
about topics such as literacy, mental health and fostering a Growth Mindset. Other
sessions will teach parents how to work with schools regarding Special Education,
Early Years Programming and the use of technology, such as All About Me and MyBlueprint.
"TVPIC's core belief is that engaging parents in school issues can make a positive
difference in the lives of our learners," says TVPIC Co-Chair Dana Parsons.
Registration is free and open to parents, guardians, administrators and Trustees
of TVDSB. Complimentary breakfast, beverages and light lunch will be served. Supervised
child care will be provided by Early Childhood Educators at no cost.
