St. Thomas - The newly branded "Skills Training & Upgrading" program is excited to
begin its fall session on September 9.
Skills Training & Upgrading is a YWCA St. Thomas - Elgin program that provides training
to adults who want to upgrade their skills for employment or who were not able to
finish high school. The program offers training in the skills necessary to pass
credit courses and get the Grade 12 diploma, to upgrade credits for post-secondary
studies or apprenticeship, or to pass the GED test to find employment or seek further
education at a college. Training is also provided for specific skills in the workplace
like reading documents, writing reports, handling money, using a computer. They
also teach skills people may need for their daily lives like helping children with
homework, managing money, or filling out complicated forms. A personalized training
plan is developed for each participant based on goals. Learning materials are provided,
and an instructor is available to help with any difficulties. This is funded by
the Province of Ontario and is free to adult learners.
Skills Training & Upgrading also runs a series of workshops. A financial literacy
workshop, "Your Money Matters", begins on November 7 and provides training to help
better manage personal finances. Skills Training & Upgrading will also run "Computer
Basics", beginning on September 24 in St. Thomas and October 29 in Aylmer, each running
for 10 classes. These sessions will cover the basics of using a computer, creating
and using email, as well as using and staying safe on the internet. Additional computer
courses including MS Word and Excel will be offered when there is community interest.
Pre-registration is required for these workshops.
Skills Training & Upgrading has two locations: St. Thomas at the YWCA St Thomas-Elgin,
16 Mary Street West, and at Aylmer Community Services, 25 Centre Street. The program
is for adults who have been out of school for at least 1 year and are over 18 years
old. The new term starts on September 9, and with a continuous intake, adults can
start now or join when they are ready.
