2,000 in Fines for Damaging Fowler's Toad Habitat

June 20, 2018 - A Port Carling man and a Blenheim contracting company have been fined a total of $2,000 for causing damage to Fowler's toad habitat.

Robert Parsons and R.E.D. Bulldozing Service, Ltd. pleaded guilty to damaging the habitat of an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Each were fined $1,000.

Court heard that in May 2017, R.E.D. Bulldozing Service, working on behalf of Parsons, used heavy equipment to regrade and level the surface of a waterfront property in the village of Erieau, in Chatham-Kent. The sandy beach in this area is considered habitat for the endangered Fowler's toad. The regrading altered and partially removed a sandy dune feature, compacting the sand and impairing the species' use of the area. Fowler's toad receives species and habitat protection under the ESA.

Justice of the Peace Marsha L. Miskokomon heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Chatham, on June 13, 2018.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) reminds landowners to consult their local MNRF district office and obtain any approvals needed prior to conducting work in species at risk habitat areas. For more information on species at risk and permit approvals, visit www.ontario.ca/speciesatrisk.

To report a natural resources violation, call the MNRF TIPS line at 1-877-847-7667 toll-free any time or contact your local ministry office during regular business hours. You can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). And visit Ontario.ca/mnrftips to view an interactive, searchable map of unsolved cases. You may be able to provide information that will help solve a case.
