The Elgin County Museum and St. Peter's Church Tyrconnell Present The 7th Annual Vimy Lecture

11 A.M., Sunday, April 9, 2017
St. Peter's Anglican Church
29596 Lakeview Line, Wallacetown

2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Of the 600 Elgin men present at the battle one played a role that has become part of our community's history and lore. Lance-Sergeant Ellis Sifton, a Wallacetown native, on April 9th, the first day of the battle, single-handedly eliminated a German machine gun emplacement at the cost of his own life. He was posthumously awarded a Victoria Cross, one of four presented to Canadians for actions during the battle.

To honour him, the museum will bring his Victoria Cross and other personal possessions to his church, St. Peter's, to mark the 100th anniversary of his act of courage. The Victoria Cross, at the time, was the highest award for bravery in the Empire. Sifton's was presented to his father, John J. Sifton, by the Governor General, the Duke of Devonshire.

This year's guest speaker is Elgin County native Blair Ferguson who has grown up with the story of Ellis Sifton and has accumulated a number of stories from the community about his life and heroic actions.

The lecture will begin at 11 am to be followed by a ceremonial unveiling of a new headstone commemorating Sifton whose final resting place is in France not far from the site of the battle. An honour guard composed of serving militia from the area will highlight the ceremony.

Lunch will be served at the church following the ceremony.

There is no charge for the event.
