In order to keep the discussion of local affairs within the limits of fair and objective
debate, we should exercise some restraint when writing letters to the editor.
First of all, personal attacks on other people should be avoided unless they are
based on factual misdeeds of other people. Private matters, such as finances should
be off the board.
Municipal employees pay, out of their own pocket, to a pension plan. The employer
also contributes but only during the tenure of that employee. The particular pension
plan here is called OMERS (Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement Savings). It is
not in any way different from pension plans in the private sector. There is no Golden
Parachute. There is no gravy train that is draining the resources of local tax payers.
A person who has the courage to speak out on local affairs has the right to do so
without being subjected to an ill-informed tirade about his personal affairs. We
have two suggestion for those writing letters to the Port Stanley News:
- Don't attack other people.
- Research the facts before you write.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment in the best local news media of its kind
in this country.
Frank and Nancy Prothero.
