We would be remiss if we allowed the passing of Ron Johnson to go by without more
comment than an obituary allows.
Those who have lived in this village for any length of time will be aware of the
contributions that Ron made to this community over many decades. More recent arrivals
might be better off for knowing what a good man he was.
As a coach and manager of minor hockey teams at every level, Ron donated thousands
of hours of his time to the youth of this village. It was always handy to have him
at the arena in case someone was injured. If they had to go to the hospital, it
was Ron who would be there to make the cast for their broken or fractured bones.
Ron also helped with the coaching chores when girl's hockey was established in Port
In the summer, Ron spent as much time at the baseball diamond as he did at the arena
in the winter.
In the late 1970s, Ron Johnson was voted Port Stanley's Man of the Year. Five years
ago he was honoured for the 38 years of service he gave to minor hockey in Port
A family man, a good neighbour and blessed with a quiet sense of humour, Ron enjoyed
the simple pleasures of life. He did not ask for a great deal. He was a Maple Leafs
We will miss Ron. We offer our sincere condolences to his family and to all those
hundreds of young people who had the benefit of his guidance.
