Port Stanley News RSS Feed Editorials Remembering Ron Johnson

February 9, 2015

We would be remiss if we allowed the passing of Ron Johnson to go by without more comment than an obituary allows.

Those who have lived in this village for any length of time will be aware of the contributions that Ron made to this community over many decades. More recent arrivals might be better off for knowing what a good man he was.

As a coach and manager of minor hockey teams at every level, Ron donated thousands of hours of his time to the youth of this village. It was always handy to have him at the arena in case someone was injured. If they had to go to the hospital, it was Ron who would be there to make the cast for their broken or fractured bones. Ron also helped with the coaching chores when girl's hockey was established in Port Stanley.

In the summer, Ron spent as much time at the baseball diamond as he did at the arena in the winter.

In the late 1970s, Ron Johnson was voted Port Stanley's Man of the Year. Five years ago he was honoured for the 38 years of service he gave to minor hockey in Port Stanley.

A family man, a good neighbour and blessed with a quiet sense of humour, Ron enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He did not ask for a great deal. He was a Maple Leafs fan.

We will miss Ron. We offer our sincere condolences to his family and to all those hundreds of young people who had the benefit of his guidance.

Thanks, Ron, for all the help over the years.
