Internet Child Exploitation Unit Unit Makes Three Arrests in One Week

June 6th, 2019 - Three men were arrested last week by members of the St. Thomas Police Internet Child Exploitation Unit with the assistance of officers from General Patrol and the Street Crimes Unit.

Three individual investigations began in early May when the St. Thomas Police Computer Forensics Analyst received three alerts in one week from the RCMP’s National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre.

The investigations lead to three different early morning warrants that were executed on Wednesday May 29th, Thursday May 30th and Friday May 31st at three separate residences. Two in the city of St. Thomas and one in Elgin County.

As a result Twenty four year old Dylan Giles of St. Thomas was taken into custody during the search warrant on Wednesday May 29th without incident and charged one count of Possession of Child Pornography contrary to section 163.1(4) of the Criminal Code of Canada. Giles was later released on a Promise to Appear in court. Electronic devices were seized during the warrant.

Thirty five year old Ahmed El Tawil of St. Thomas was taken into custody during the search warrant on Thursday May 30th without incident and charged one count of Possession of Child Pornography contrary to section 163.1(4) of the Criminal Code of Canada. El Tawil was later released on a Promise to Appear in court. Electronic devices were seized during the warrant.

The third male, a fifty three year old from Elgin County was taken into custody without incident during a traffic stop and a search warrant was conducted at his residence. The man is charged with four counts Breach of Recognizance and one count Possession of Child Pornography. The man is currently at large in the community released on court conditions to obey a twenty four hour curfew inside his residence, not to possess any device capable of accessing the internet and is prohibited from possessing weapons or ammunition. The conditions of release were put in place while the male awaits his court proceeding for an incident back in 2017 where he was charged with one count of Voyeurism, one count of Possession of Child Pornography, one count Distribution of Child Pornography, one count Production of Child Pornography, eighteen counts of Luring a Child Under the Age of 18 and three counts of Luring a Child Under the Age of 16. The man was held for court and remanded into custody. A publication ban has been placed on the details of the case.

Driver Charged After Disobeying School Bus

June 6th, 2019 - A thirty four year old St. Thomas woman was charged yesterday morning with failing to stop for a school bus. The bus was travelling southbound on St. Catharine Street when it stopped near Scott Street with flashing lights and arm bar activated. The driver travelling eastbound on Scott Street made a left hand turn onto St. Catharine Street passing through the school bus loading zone. The bus driver and witnesses at the bus stop were able to record the licence plate of the vehicle and provide it to police. The driver is also charged with having an expired permit. The fine for disobeying a school bus is $490 and six demerit points.
