Fiona Roberts settled in Belmont over 20 years ago along with her husband David
and their two children.
Since moving to Belmont, Fiona has served on many boards and associations in the
community including, South Dorchester PS council chair, HUB executive and Belmont
She currently serves as Ward 5 councillor in the Municipality of Central Elgin.
She is also on the Board of Westminster Mutual Insurance Company, is a member of
the Belmont Community Policing Committee, 2nd vice with the Belmont Lions Club and
a member of Age Friendly Community Advisory Committee. She was formerly an associate
stockbroker with RBC Dominion Securities for over 10 years.
Fiona's priorities are cost efficiency along with increasing the tax base through
economic development and promotion. She also believes in increasing our resource
utilization through such initiatives as 12 month/year arena operation.
I see our primary concern continuing to be the tug-of-war between public demand
for infrastructure and the need for responsible and steady growth.
Central Elgin is in the enviable position of being close to London and having one
of the best harbours on Lake Erie. We are becoming not only a destination to visit
but a destination to live. Our tax base is mainly residential and agriculture which
limits our revenue options. As our tax base increases, so does the demand for services
and hence our increase in costs. Council, in working with staff, have done an excellent
job of controlling those costs and have given us a bright future through long-term
planning and budgeting.
Tax increases over the past 4 years have been negligible, less that the rate of
inflation. I believe in this long-term approach and any deviation would require
either service cuts or tax increases, both of which I oppose.
