Lake Erie Open Water Swim

Port Stanley, ON, July 31, 2019 - On Saturday, August 3rd, a keen group of swimmers of all ages will be taking to the waters of Lake Erie as part of the Lake Erie: Try An Open Water Swim event at Port Stanley. The event is part of the Canadian Freshwater Alliance’s Explore the Thames series, which has brought Londoners a variety of unique experiences and shone a spotlight on the key environmental issues that our precious lakes and rivers face. Making the connection to local waters through these events is an important first step in the conversation about the health of the Thames River and Lake Erie, and the conservation efforts to protect them.

The Lake Erie Open Water Swim event will be held in partnership with Josh Reid, co-director of South West Ontario Open Water Swim. Reid is a coach, race organizer, and seasoned swimmer who has completed open water swims up to 25kms in length. Last year he organized a 24-hour swim to highlight the health of Lake Erie.

The sport of open water swimming is a wonderful and invigorating experience, but does pose some unique dangers not initially apparent if you are more used to swimming in a pool. Risks can include strong waves and currents, limited visibility in the water, disorientation, unexpected temperature changes, and poor water quality due to toxic algae blooms and E. coli. Fortunately, Reid will teach the group how to identify and address these challenges during his tutorial before the 400m open water race course is opened to the swimmers.

Explore the Thames is made possible thanks to the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
