For better or worse, Canada has chosen to legalize marijuana, a decision accompanied
by much wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth in some quarters and delighted lighting
up in others.
A major problem facing the country is how distribution and access will be controlled.
The answer seems to be to turn the sale of weed over to major retailers such as
Shoppers Drug Mart, a solution that ignores the potential for benefits that all
Canadians would share.
We know that the Canadian Post Office has hundreds, if not thousands of outlets
across Canada, serving even small and remote communities. We also know that the
post office struggles to remain profitable in this day of electronic communications.
Why not market marijuana through Canada Pot (formerly Canada Post)? In addition
to having ideal locations, the post office is equipped with weigh scales and people
who know how to operate them and they are experts in discrete packaging and delivery
to households or community boxes. Thousands of postal letter boxes could be converted
to automated kiosks for the sale of cannabis. Marijuana flavoured stamps and hemp
envelopes are two of the many possibilities for imaginative marketing. The Pot Office
is well positioned to participate in international trade in this product.
The potential revenue is staggering. We could become a nation with no taxes, just
a pot of pot money to spend. We might even change our national anthem to OH CANNABIS.
This is a grand opportunity and the country should press forward with this opportunity.
We might, however, have to change that old, familiar slogan to read: "Neither snow
nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night nor being stoned on weed stays these couriers
from the swift completion of their appointed rounds."
