Suspected Stolen Property Can Be Checked Online

Elgin County, ON - The Elgin County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind the public of a way to check property they may be buying second hand as potentially stolen.

With the increase in public trade / auction websites police are receiving calls from citizens regarding property that they would like to buy, but are concerned it may be stolen.

The Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) is offering the public access to a free website that will check property instantly. Properties that can be checked are as follows:

  • Vehicle Identification Number (V.I.N)
  • Property Serial Numbers
  • Boats by Name, Hull Identification Numbers, Licence Number, Registration Number
  • Boat motors by Serial Number
  • Bicycle by Serial Number
  • Firearms by Serial Number

Members of the public are reminded that if they receive a positive hit to contact police immediately regarding the property they are inquiring about. It is a criminal offence to knowingly be in possession of property obtained by crime. The OPP can be contacted 24/7 at 1-888-310-1122.

A reminder to anyone that thinks the property could be lost or stolen should still contact their local police agency. This is only a tool used to help aid the potential buyer of second hand property.

Please visit the website: http://app.cpic-cipc.ca/English/search.cfm for your future inquiries about property.
