Extreme Cold Warning in effect for:

  • St. John's and vicinity

A prolonged period of very cold wind chills is expected.

A frigid airmass combined with moderate to strong northwesterly winds will create an extended period of wind chills between minus 35 and minus 25 today and again tonight.

Conditions will improve Thursday as winds diminish and temperatures rise.

Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to NLstorm@canada.ca or tweet reports using #NLwx.
