Special weather statement in effect for:

  • St. John's and vicinity

Rain and strong winds expected Wednesday.

A low pressure system developing near the Great Lakes will intensify as it moves across New England Wednesday night and into western Labrador on Thursday and eventually out to sea late in the week.

Light snow or freezing rain will develop over western and central Newfoundland Wednesday morning and spread to the Great Northern Peninsula by afternoon. This precipitation will then quickly change to rain.

Over southern Newfoundland, the rain will begin Wednesday morning and spread to eastern regions by afternoon. The rain will become heavy at times along the southwest coast on Wednesday evening with the potential to produce significant rainfall amounts.

In addition, strong winds, especially in areas prone to enhanced southeasterlies along the west coast, can be expected overnight Tuesday night and on Wednesday. A Wreckhouse wind warning has been issued and the public is advised that further wind warnings may be required.

Conditions are expected to improve late overnight Wednesday or Thursday morning.
